Causes of yeast infection include stress, a poor diet, or the use of antibiotics.

Among the symptoms, there can be several. Candida likes sugar, so one of the symptoms could be a constant craving for sweets, even after eating them.

It also causes tiredness, mood swings, lack of focus, and a whitish tongue. And if candida is present in the vagina, itching.

Candida Yeast Infection: Diagnosis and treatment

A yeast infection diagnosis is made through a direct examination (usually the presence of canker sores, spots, and whitish secretions can be observed); microscopic examination, urine culture, and other complementary studies.

The diagnosis of intestinal candidiasis is one of the most complicated since it requires the demonstration of invasion of the intestinal mucosa by candida or the repeated isolation of the microorganism from ulcerative lesions.

Likewise, as previously explained, its prevalence is low.

The first-line treatment, in all cases, is antifungal medications. However, several complications can sometimes occur when treatment is unresponsive, or there is a recurrence of infection due to:

  • The use of broad-spectrum antibiotics that promote the proliferation of fungi and decrease the protective bacterial flora
  • Some people develop resistance to antifungals due to the presence of other candida species or due to a genetic polymorphism in the dectin-1 sequence, Y238X, which predisposes them to recurrent Candida infections
  • Intestinal fungi could be considered as a permanent reservoir in recurrent vaginal yeast infection

Candidiasis is not an STI. But it is still possible to spread yeast infection to your partner.

If your partner is a man, the risk of infection is low. About 15% of men feel an itchy penis if they have had unprotected sex with a woman who has a vaginal yeast infection.

If this happens to you, your partner should see a doctor. Men who have not been circumcised and those with diabetes are at increased risk.
